Segment #1: Interview with Dr. Pat Sawyer
We are hearing a lot about "systemic racism" and "systemic injustice" right now. But what is it? And is it real? What does the data actually say? In this rare media appearance, we got to take a deep dive into this important topic with Dr. Pat Sawyer. And we explored what Christians can do on a practical level to overcome systemic injustices that we encounter.
Dr. Pat Sawyer is a Professor of Cultural Studies and Communication at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is also a colleague of our friend and former guest, Dr. Neil Shenvi.
Dr. Sawyer gave us some very detailed definitions and explanations of racism and systemic racism. He helped us understand the difference between “de jure” and “de facto” racism/discrimination and how these processes have impacted our nation historically and in the current culture. Dr. Sawyer helped us understand that discrimination is not a 1:1 cause of the disparities we currently see in society. As Christians, we need to start with a Biblical epistemology! Knowing the truth of the Bible will protect us from error.
There are many things we as Christians can do to address systemic racism at the individual, community, and national levels. Some examples are volunteering at your local homeless shelter or foodbank, helping to provide training in entrepreneurship, business, and/or microlending. We only scratched the surface on the tangible ways Christians can get involved and we look forward to having Dr. Sawyer back to continue the conversation!
