A key theme on the podcast this year is justice for the pre-born. We are exploring the issue from a variety of different angles. This week, our friend Erin Kunkle, came on the show to discuss her experience as a teenage mother and her journey to the faith.
Erin Kunkle is a friend and colleague in ministry. She is the wife of Brett (celebrating 27 years of marriage!) and mother of 5 children, grandmother of 3, homeschooling mom, and partner with Brett in ministry at MAVEN, a youth-focused ministry, which they started 7 years ago.
Be sure to watch this episode, as Erin tells the powerful story of how God used a difficult situation in her life to draw her to Himself. She explains that although she was raised in a Christian home and grew up going to church, she did not understand how the Christian worldview related to her everyday life. This was a struggle in the church 30 years ago and it still is today; this is a critical aspect of MAVEN ministries–teaching young people, and the adults who work with them, how to have a robust Christian worldview that applies to all aspects of everyday life!
Advice on how to recover from a mistake:
Find wise Christians around you to seek counsel and advice
It is good to find someone older than you who has already walked through the same stage of life
Remember: Many people have experienced sexual brokenness and everyone has made mistakes!
Do not stay quiet! You are not alone!
Start telling people the truth!
Be humble and ask for help!
Start reading the Bible! Start in the Gospels and study the life of Jesus!
How do we have a balanced conversation about difficult topics?
Recognize that some topics are just difficult to talk about (such as sexual sin & pregnancy)
Parents–it’s okay to experience a range of emotions, such as grief, anger, disappointment, etc
As Christians, we want to always speak the truth, with love; in other words, we must explain to young people that sin has grave consequences and leads to death & explain God’s design for sex within marriage and the purpose of boundaries for our protection
Share your own story of brokenness and struggle (if appropriate), in order to relate to them shoulder-to-shoulder and not come across as condemning or prideful
